Harry Potter dan Kamar Rahasia (Harry Potter, #2)


Harry Potter kembali beraksi di tahun ke-2 nya di Hogwarts. Setelah mendapat halangan untuk kembali ke Hogwarts, oleh makhluk peri rumah bernama Dombi, di tambah dia bersama Ron Weasley tidak bisa menembus loket Hogwarts Express, namun ia berusaha untuk bisa kembali ke sekolah sihirnya. Dan ketika berhasil kembali ke sekolah sihir Hogwarts, malapetaka justru terjadi, ketika bebrapa siswa Hogwarts ditemukan membatu, dan Harry disebut-sebut sebagai salah stau tersangka.

Dalam edisi kedua Serial Harry Potter ini, saya masih dapat menikmati kisah Harry Potter, apalagi jalan ceritanya tidak terlalu kompleks, sesuatu yang membuat saya agak telat menyukai buku bergenre fantasy. Apalagi jalan ceritanya sendiri, selalu melahirkan kejutan-kejutan yang tak tertebak, patut untuk menjadi salah satu judul favorit.

Harry Potter dan Batu Bertuah (Harry Potter, #1)




Harry Potter mungkin tak akan menyangka, bahwa dia adalah seorang penyihir. Siapa sangka, hanya diberitahukan oleh paman dan bibinya yang mengasuhnya dengan tidak baik, keluarga Dudley, orangtuanya mati karena kecelakaan mobil, tapi sebenarnya kedua orang tuanya adalah seorang penyihir, yang dibunuh oleh seorang penyihir jahat, Voldemort. Dan dia harus melanjutkan hidupnya seperti kisah kedua orangtuanya, belajar sihir di sekolah sihir-Hogwarts untuk menjadi penyihir. Namun bukan sekedar penyihir biasa, karena ketika hendak dibunuh oleh Voldemort dalam usaha membunuh kedua orangtuanya, dia berhasil selamat. Dan berkat itulah, ia digadang-gadang kelak akan menjadi seorang legenda penyihir. Dalam buku Harry Potter dan Batu Bertuah ini mengisahkan kehidupan Harry dalam tahun pertamanya di Hogwarts.

Wow, kesan itu yang saya dapatkan setelah membaca buku ini. Seolah-olah dunia sihir benar-benar nyata di hadapan kita, lengkap dengan berbagai makhluk aneh yang tak kita temui di kehidupan nyata. J.K. Rowling memang layak mendapat acungan jempol untuk karya Harry Potter ini. Kisah sekolah sihir sendiri rasanya cukup unik, tak hanya mengisahkan tentang penyihir semata, tetapi juga kisah menjadi penyihir dalam kehidupan berjenjang Harry.

Harry Potter merupakan salah satu fenomena dalam dunia perbukuan. Siapa sangka, J.K. Rowling yang hanyalah seorang single-mother tak dikenal bisa menciptakan mahakarya di dunia perbukuan. Tak tanggung-tanggung jutaan buku terjual habis, dan setiap edisi barunya terbit, antrian pembeli sangat panjang untuk bisa membeli bukunya. Tak heran, mengingat kisahnya sangat bagus. Fantasi yang ada, kisah sekolah sihir, manusia yang disebut sebagai muggles, permainan Quidditch, makhluk aneh, dan lain sebagainya bisa memikat pembacanya.

Perpustakaan: Perpusda Prov. Jateng

Di akun goodreads saya, beberapa buku saya masukan shelf pinjem-perpus, karena memang buku itu tidak saya miliki ketika membacanya, tetapi hasil pinjaman dari perpustakaan.

Ada beberapa perpustakaan umum yang pernah saya sambangi untuk bisa meminjam buku; perpustakaan sd, smp, sma, universitas, fakultas, jurusan, laboratorium, smapai ke perpustakaan daerah. Beberapa perpustakaan daerah bahkan, mengadakan momen yang dicintai oleh pecinta buku, pameran buku.

Sekarang ini, saya aktif meminjam buku di perpustakaan provinsi Jawa Tengah, yang berada di bawah naungan Badan Arsip dan Perpustakaan Daerah, Provinsi Jawa Tengah. Selain lokasinya yang dekat dengan kantor, saya, akhirnya, bisa mendapatkan beberapa buku yang mendapat kategori bagus di goodreads, dan memang isinya benar-benar bagus, di perpustakaan ini. Beberapa malah sudah tidak bisa didapatkan di berbagai toko buku lagi.

Untuk menjadi anggota cukup mudah, hanya berbekal foto kopi KTP dan mengisi surat referensi yang ditandatanagi kepala RT/RW atau atasan kerja, plus membayar Rp 5.000,00 kita sudah mendapat kartu anggota. Kita bisa meminjam 2 buku dengan masa pinjaman 2 minggu. Dan jangan lupa, sabtu minggu pun perpustakaan ini tetap buka, meski dnegan jam buka yang lebih singkat.

My Sister's Keeper

Andromeda 'Anna' Fitzgerald, adalah bocah yang ingin menikmati kehidupan dunia. Tapi siapa sangka, dia hidup di dunia awalnya adalah bukan untuk menikmati dunia. Dia dilahirkan, hanyalah untuk menjadi sosok penyokong kehidupan, Kate Fitzgerald, kakak kandungnya, yang menderita acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), leukimia dengan tingkat kemungkinan kesembuhan yang sangat rendah, dengan cara menjadi sumber donor hidup, untuk upaya pengobatan Kate. Tuntutan itu, dihadapi Sara, sang ibu, yang bertidaklangsung menghadapi Anna dalam pengadilan tersebut, karena Sara berkeinginan keras agar Anna tetap mendonorkan ginjalnya.

Ketika Kate menderita gagal ginjal, Anna diminta untuk mendonorkan salah satu ginjalnya untuk sang kakak. Anna mulai mempertanyakan keputusan orang tuanya, Sara dan Brian Fitzgerald, dengan mengajukan tuntutan lewat pengadilan. Keputusan yang mengejutkan, bagi keluarga Fitzgerald, dan perjuangan Anna tersebut diapresiasi oleh Campbell Alexander, yang dipilih Anna untuk menjadi pengacaranya dalam persidangan tuntutan tersebut.

My Sister's Keeper bagi saya bukanlah sekedar novel biasa. Tapi merupakan novel kehidupan yang maknanya sangat dalam dan bisa menjadi bahan renungan bagi kita, akan makna sebuah pengorbanan. Keputusan membuat novel dengan beberapa sudut pandang, bagi saya adalah keputusan cerdas oleh sang penulis, karena dengan mendapatkan pandangan berbeda dari berbagai tokohnya, membuat cerita semakin kompleks dari berbagai sisi. Kisah tentang kehidupan, cinta keluarga, keadilan dalam keluarga, terangkai dalam pesona tema yang sebenarnya sudah sangat menarik menjadikan buku ini perlu mendapat acungan jempol. Kita akan mendapatkan gambaran keluarga Fitzgerald dengan masalah yang ada, namun dari situ kita bisa belajar mengenai hidup dan pilihan hidup. Cintailah keluargamu, kesan terkuat yang saya dapat dari Jodi Picoult dalam My Sister's Keeper.

A Beautiful Mind

Film A Beautiful Mind yang dibintangi oleh Russel Crowe, beberapa tahun yang lalu telah memikat saya! Dan hal itu membuat saya berkeinginan untuk bisa membaca bukunya. Dan kesempatan itu datang berapa tahun kemudian.

Agak berat juga, sepertinya, melihat tebal bukunya, tapi rasanya kemagisan filmnya yang membuat saya bergerak untuk membaca buku setebal 625 halaman ini. Awal yang berat, ketika harus bertemu dengan berbagai istilah matematika. Istilah yang dikenal mungkin hanyalah aljabar, geometri, kalkulus, dan yang teristimewa: teori permainan, subyek yang pernah saya dapatkan di kuliah, dan kelak mengantarkan John F. Nash sebagai peraih Nobel Ekonomi, dengan temuan Nash-Equilibriumnya, yang tersohor di kalangan matematikawan.

Kisah hidup Nash sendiri, akan kita jumpai tak hanya sisi positifnya, tetapi juga beberapa hal negatif terkait kepribadiannya akan kita jumpai di buku ini, melengkapi gambaran kita bagaimana dia mendapatkan penyakit Skizofrenianya. Seorang jenius yang mendapatkan ke-gila-annya, justru ketika sedang berada di karir yang berkembang, di saat akan mendapat status guru besar di MIT. Bersama skizofrenianya tersebut, dia menghadapi hidup yang berat, ditambah permasalahan keluarganya yang semakin menumpuk, membuat kita termangu, sampai sejauhmana seorang Nash bisa bertahan.

Buku ini menggambarkan kisah hidup Nash dengan baik, meski berkeliaran akan istilah matematika maupun sosok matematikawan, dan hei, saya mendapatkan, ternyata solidaritas sesama genius pun cukup tinggi, dikisahkan bagaimana kolega-kolega Nash memberikan dukungan yang sangat berarti. Jenius bukan berarti berego tinggi.

Saya menggolongkan buku ini sebagai buku yang tak ringan untuk dibaca. Meskipun demikian, nilainya cukup tinggi. Disertai terjemahannya yang cukup baik, rasanya patut buku ini menjadi rujukan penting.

1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die

Peter Boxall, guru besar Sastra Inggris, di Sussex University menulis sebuah buku berjudulkan 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die Isinya adalah 1001 novel yang layak dibaca sebelum kita meninggal. Daftar ini memang tidak akan sempurna, karena novel-novel bagus akan selalu bertambah, dan saya yakin, Boxall belum membaca semua buku yang tidak masuk dalam daftar tersebut, sehingga bisa jadi ada buku yang lebih baik dari pilihannya, meski terbit sebelum Boxall menerbitkan buku 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die ini.

The Heike Story


Kekuasaan, di mana saja, kapan pun akan selalu menjadi impian bagi manusia dalam hidupnya. Buku ini mengisahkan salah satu epos perebutan kekuasaan di tanah Jepang, pada abad 12. Khusus menggambarkan kehidupan Kiyomori, selaku pemimpin klan Heike, salah stau klan samurai besar di Jepang, selain klan Genji, yang merupakan musuh utama klan Heike.

Kesetiaan samurai di buku ini, digambarkan, dimanfaatkan oleh para bangsawan, untuk tahta kerajaan. Maka tak heran, sesama saudara pun akan saling menikam. Tak kenal saudara, yang ada hanyalah satu kepentingan. Kawan bisa menjadi lawan di lain waktu, demikian juga sebaliknya.

Eiji Yoshikawa, sudah snagat luar biasa menuliskan kisah Klan Heike ini. Meskipun bukunya tebal, tapi saya masih bisa menikmati meskipun kadangkala harus membolak-balik halaman-halamannya, untuk mengetahui siapakah tokoh ini, dan berpihak pada siapakah, mengingat banyak tokoh dan nama yang tak gampang diingat dengan sekilas baca.

Sekedar informasi, NHK mengangkat kisah Heike ini, dalam taiga (drama klasik) Jepang yang akan tayang mulai tahun 2012.

Seberapa hebatkah makhluk bernama manusia itu? Kalau membaca novel ini, kita harus menyadari, bahwa manusia hebat dalam menghancurkan alam dan sumberdayanya.

Tuhan mengajarkan kepada kita, bahwa dunia di sekitar kita adalah hidup untuk belajar, merenung. Tapi yang ada ketamakan manusia sendiri yang melupakan nilai-nilai yang dapat dipelajari dari alam.
Wolf Totem, mengisahkan kisah manusia pemburu Mongolia yang tinggal di wilayah Olonbulag, kekuasaan Cina. Chen Zhen, adalah salah seorang pelajar yang dikirimkan Mao, pimpinan Cina saat itu untuk hidup bersama mereka. Bersama masyarakat pemburu-pengembara Olonbulag, Chen Zhen belajar kearifan alam masyarakat, juga mengawali ketertarikan akan kehidupan serigala, yang dianggap sebagai makhluk setengah suci, bagi sebagian besar bangsa Mongolia tradisional. Bahkan terang-terangan, bangsa Mongolia adalah belajar dari serigala, untuk hal seperti strategi perang sekalipun.
Dengan ketertarikan tersebut, dia menculik salah satu anak serigala kecil, untuk mempelajari bagaimana kehidupannya dengan dalih untuk mempelajari secara ilmiah, hal yang ditentang oleh kawanan pengembara tersebut. Dan apa yang dia dapatkan dari sosok Serigala Kecilnya adalah hal-hal yang luar biasa.

Dari buku ini, kita banyak mendapatkan kearifan alam. Bagaimana ekosistem rantai makanan yang dilanggar manusia akan merusak kehidupan di alam dan berakibat buruk sebagai efeknya. Membaca buku ini, membuat kita terenung, apakah sifat manusia lebih baik ketimbang, serigala misalnya?

Rumah Seribu Malaikat



















5 kali sudah tawaran untuk mengangkat anak, ditolak oleh pasangan Badawi. Tapi kenapa ada penawaran, untuk yang ke-enam kali?
Mulai dari keputusan untuk menyetujui pengangkatan anak itu, kemudian berlanjut ke penawan-penawaran selanjutnya, akhirnya di rumah keluarga Badawi sekarang ada belasan anak, dari 4 anak kandung, sampai belasan anak angkat.
Bagaimana perjuangan keluarga Badawi mengasuh seluruh putra-putrinya, diangkat dalam buku ini. Kita, atau siapa pun bisa belajar dari buku ini. Bahwa hidup, memanglah tidak mudah, tapi akan lebih indah, apabila di tengah kesulitan hidup kita masih bisa memberikan sesuatu yang berharga, bagi kemanusiaan.

Dwilogi Padang Bulan- Still With Hirata’s Style




















Masih mirip dengan tulisan Hirata sebelumnya, menarik, menggugah semangat, penuh kekocakan, serta mengkritik tanpa rasa pedas. Kisah Novel dwilogi Padang Bulan mengisahkan Ikal yang ikut membantu perjuangan Enong, yang kemudian dikenal sebagai Maryamah Karpov, yang menjadi judul novel terakhir tetralogi Laskar Pelangi, untuk bagaimana bisa bangkit dari kesedihan yang terus melanda menjadi wanita yang tangguh; mencari uang dari menimbang timah, menguasai bahasa inggris, serta menundukkan jawara catur di kampung yang adalah mantan suaminya yang menelantarkannya.

Novel ini angat bagus, dan menurut saya kembali perlu dapat apresiasi, setelah saya agak kecewa dengan novel Maryamah Karpov. Masih menceritakan tentang kehidupan masyarakat melayu di Belitong, tapi dengan latar perjuangan Enong, yang saat itu masih mendapat berbagai kecaman, karena dia berjenis kelamin wanita, ketika bagaimana dia mulai ikut menambang timah sampai ikut mengikuti lomba catur 17 Agustus untuk mewujudkan ambisi bisa mengalahkan mantan suaminya.

Mungkin yang agak menganggu bagi saya adalah bagaiamana secara tiba-tiba Hirata mengganti panggilan Enong menjadi Maryamah di sesi kedua (Cinta di Dalam Gelas). Secara keseluruhan, novel ini masih senilai dengan tetralogi Laskar Pelangi: menakjubkan!

Kisah Santri Pondok Madani




















Ada satu buku menarik yang saya beli di Toko Buku Gramedia di Malioboro Mall. Buku ini berjudul Negeri 5 Menara, karya A. Fuadi. Yang jelas, sudah agak lama penasaran dengan buku ini, apalagi setelah melihatnya di talk show Kick Andy. Bukunya sendiri menceritakan kisah kehidupan sang penulis, ketika nyantri di Pondok Pesantren Gontor, Ponorogo yang dalam buku ini dituliskan sebagai Pondok Madani. Tokoh Alif, yang merupakan sang penulis dalam novel ini, dikisahkan memiliki setengah hati untuk meneruskan pendidikan lanjutnya setelah lulus Madrasah Tsanawiyah, ke sekolah agama. Paksaan Amak, yang tidak diduga oleh Alif, terpaksa dilakukannya, padahal dia sendiri menginginkan bersekolah di sekolah umum, bersama Randai, teman yang sekaligus menjadi sparring partner-nya. Mesipun masih setengah hati, namun Alif terinspirasi oleh semboyan Arab yang menjadi patokan hidup di pesantren Madani, yaitu Man Jadda Wa Jadda, “Siapa yang berusaha sunguh-sungguh, akan berhasil” dan dengan semboyan yang menjadi mantra tersebut, akhirnya Alif bisa menyelesaikan studinya di Pondok Madani, bersama rekan-rekannya Shahibul Menara, yang menjadi tokoh dalam novel ini.
Sekilas, Alif bersama sahabat menaranya mirip dengan Ikal beserta Laskar Pelangi, tetapi terdapat berbagai perbedaan, khususnya pandangan cerita tersebut. Sama-sama mengisahkan impian yang bisa dicapai dengan usaha yang luar biasa, Negeri 5 Menara lebih konsen akan kisah kehidupan sehari-hari di kehidupan pesantren, yang selama ini masih belum tampak oleh masyarakat umum secara detail. Juga meskipun mengisahkan kehidupan sekolah agama, buku ini tak lantas bermuatan ajaran agama Islam, tapi lebih ke nilai-nilai yang bisa dicerna pemeluk agama lain. Yang jelas buku ini sangat bagus, dan patut untuk menjadi bahan pembelajaran, terutana bagi yang suka dengan buku-buku menggugah semangat. Bravo buat Ustad A. Fuadi, sang penulis.

My Stupid Boss: Gokil Abis Dech















Ingin cari buku yang gokil abis dan bisa bikin ketawa? Coba deh, buku yang satu ini. Sudah pernah nyoba sih, bikin ketawa nggak abis-abis. Kisahnya sih tentang kehidupan seorang kerani dan sang bos di sebuah berhad di Malaysia. Meskipun latarnya di Malaysia, pelaku di buku ini adalah WNI asli lho. Kisah yang ada adalah bagaimana si boss bisa bekerja dengan gokil-nya sehingga kerapkali membuat sang kerani stres tidak kepalang. Pokoknya si boss adalah orang yang agak-agak *pokoknya baca aja deh sendiri bukunya. Sampai kita sendiri heran, kok ada sih boss yang kayak gitu....
So, menurut saya, buku ini cocok buat ngilangin stres. Dan membuat kita beruntung, ternyata bos yang kita punya masih lebih baik daripada boss si kerani, wakakakaka
